The community of Elko BC is along highway #3 between Cranbrook and Fernie.
The Silver Springs Lake hike is within the loosely defined Mount Broadwood Heritage Conservation area. The hike is a favourite in spring for the flowers and in autumn for fall colours. Although, summer is great for relaxing, swimming and fishing at these low elevation lakes. Winter also is a quiet magical time to visit the lakes too, but the area will be better suited on snowshoes and not skis.
Jumbo Pass hike is a full day hike from either the East or West Kootenay trailheads. The trip makes also a grand backpacking trip as Jumbo Pass straddles a high alpine ridge featuring views of glacier clad peaks of the Northern Purcell Mountains.
Janice Strong is an avid hiker, snowshoer and skier, exploring the East Kootenay outdoors year round.
Janice is an established outdoor photographer with many of her Kootenay images appearing on several respected publications. Her photographs hang in collections all over the world.
She shares her passion of the outdoors with others and has introduced hundreds of people to the joys of hiking. For a decade she led hikes for the City of Cranbrook – Parks and Recreation. With her guidance, many people have themselves become enthusiastic hikers. Climbing mountains, finding new places and enjoying the journey have always been important to Janice. She cherishes the little things she sees along the trail as well as the destinations.
When Janice is not writing, hiking or taking photographs, she is involved in various creative digital or photographic projects for clients. She and her husband, enjoy rural property, near Cranbrook, BC.
